Yasmin & Yaz Dosage

Yaz and Yasmin are fourth generation oral contraceptives, produced by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals. The only difference between Yaz and Yasmin is the amount of ethinyl estradiol each birth control pill contains. While both Yaz and Yasmin contain 20mg drospirenone:

  • Yasmin contains 30mcg ethinyl estradiol
  • Yaz contains 20mcg ethinyl estradiol

Both of these medications are 24/4 cycles, meaning that the first 24 pills are active with hormones while the last 4 are inactive (placebos). During the last 4 days in the cycle, the lack of hormones in these pills will trigger the uterine lining to shed, thus initiating menstruation.

Women can skip a menstrual cycle by immediately starting a new pack of Yaz or Yasmin after taking the first 24 active pills (this basically means skipping the placebo pills and continue ingesting hormones). Women who choose to skip a period should keep in mind, however, that medical professionals recommend that you have at least three menstruation cycles each year to stay healthy.

Yaz Dosage Instructions

Instructions for taking Yaz and Yasmin are the same and are fairly simple. For optimal effectiveness, women should take the pill every day, within four hours of the same time. If patients miss a dose, they should take the pill as soon as they remember (or, if it's close to when they should take the next pill, they can take two pills at the scheduled time). If patients only miss one pill during a cycle, they will still be significantly protected from pregnancy and will not need to use an alternative form of birth control, such as condoms or spermicide.

Should patients miss two (or more) pills in a cycle they will need to use alternate form of contraception. If more than three pills are missed, women should just start a new pack of Yaz.

Alternately, women who overdose on Yaz will require immediate medical attention. Yaz and Yasmin overdose symptoms include nausea, vomiting and/or vaginal bleeding.
