Yaz Period Issues
Yaz is a birth control pill that is comprised of the generic drug drospirenone, as well as a bioactive estrogen known as ethinyl estradiol. Bayer HealthCare manufactures Yaz, along with other drospirenone-containing birth control pills Yasmin and its generic Ocella.
Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella have been reported to cause various mild to severe side effects, including blood clots and menstrual problems. When Yaz menstrual side effects result in serious health complications, injured women will likely have a legal claim against Bayer HealthCare and will, consequently, be eligible to seek compensation for their injuries and losses.
The following are some facts regarding menstrual problems that may be caused by Yaz, Yasmin or Ocella.
Yaz Early or Late Periods
It is common that, when women first begin a course of Yaz, Yasmin or Ocella, their menstrual cycles will fluctuate as they adjust to receiving doses of hormones. Because Yaz has a 24/4-day pill cycle (meaning 24 pill are active with hormones while the last four are inactive placebos), most women tend to experience late periods (a few days later than normal). However, it is not uncommon that menstruation will start earlier than usual due to hormone fluctuations.
Such chances in menstruation are not serious health problems, and they tend to work themselves out as the woman's body becomes accustomed to Yaz.
Yaz Long Period
Hormonal changes that occur when women start a course of Yaz may also cause longer than normal periods. Commonly, in the first months of taking Yaz, menstrual cycles may be preceded or followed by periods of spotting.
If these extended periods are NOT accompanied by abdominal pain, fever or blood clots in vaginal discharge, then there is no cause for worry. However, if such symptoms are present with extended periods, it's essential that women see their doctors for a thorough physical exam.
Taking Yaz to Skip Period
Healthcare professionals recommend that women get their periods at least three times a year - less than this can cause or indicate the presence of serious health problems. To skip a menstrual cycle while taking Yaz, women should skip the four placebo pills and, once they are finished with the 24 active pills in the previous pack, start on the next set of 24 active pills in the next pack.
The continuing ingestion of hormones "tricks" the body into not shedding the uterus, which causes menstrual bleeding.
