Yaz & Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
Yaz is a birth control pill that has been reported to cause a variety of serious, life-threatening side effects, including pulmonary embolism. PE is a condition in which blood clots make their way to the lungs' arteries and impair breathing. Without prompt treatment, pulmonary embolism will be fatal. In fact, approximately 33 percent of those with undiagnosed, untreated PE die from the condition.
Symptoms of Pulmonary Embolism
Yaz patients should familiarize themselves with the symptoms of PE so they know when to seek immediate medical care. Most commonly, pulmonary embolism symptoms include:
- Chest pain that worsens with deep breathing, eating, coughing, bending, stooping or physically exerting oneself
- Cough that may be bloody
- Shortness of breath that has a rapid onset regardless of whether an individual is active or at rest
Other PE symptoms that occur less frequently include:
- Clammy, bluish skin (due to lack of oxygen in the blood)
- Fainting
- Irregular or increased heartbeat
- Leg swelling
- Lightheadedness
- Sweating
- Weak pulse
- Wheezing
Women with the greatest risk of developing PE while taking Yaz include those with a history of:
- Blood clot disorders in their family lines
- Certain types of cancer, particularly pancreatic, ovarian and lung cancers
- Heart disease
- Obesity
- Prolonged immobility, due to bed rest or long journeys
- Surgery, particularly hip and knee replacement surgeries (In general, the risk increases the longer the surgery is.)
- Poor lifestyle choices, such as smoking or smoking while taking a birth control pill such as Yaz
Additionally, the older a woman is, the higher her risk is of developing Yaz-related pulmonary embolism.
Yaz Birth Control Lawsuits
Yaz patients diagnosed with pulmonary embolism should consult an experienced Yaz injury attorney, once their health is no longer in threat. Those who have a legitimate legal claim can recover compensation for their injuries and losses by following through with a Yaz defective drug lawsuit.
