Is There a Yaz Recall?

To date, neither the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) nor Bayer HealthCare has issued a Yaz (drospirenone) recall. Yaz, which was first approved as an effective form of contraception in 2001, is currently prescribed to prevent pregnancy, as well as to treat moderate acne and PMDD. Along with Yaz, Bayer also produces two other drospirenone-based birth control pills, Yasmin and its generic: Ocella.

Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella have not been recalled, but they may cause severe, potentially life threatening side effects, including blood clots, heart attack and stroke. Although rare, Yaz birth control side effects can be deadly, especially if they go unnoticed or untreated.

If you or a loved one has sustained Yaz injuries, you will likely qualify to file a personal injury claim against Bayer HealthCare. Injured parties can learn more about their legal rights and entitlements during a free initial consult with one of our experienced Yaz lawyers.

Drospirenone Side Effects

Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella have all been reported to cause the following serious side effects:

  • Blood clots
  • Breast lumps
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), blood clots in the body's deep veins that interfere with healthy circulation
  • Gallbladder disease (as well as other digestive problems)
  • Heart attack
  • Hyperkalemia, life-threatening levels of potassium in the blood
  • Liver or kidney damage
  • Pulmonary embolism (PE), potentially fatal blood clots in the lungs
  • Stroke

It's vital that women thinking of taking Yaz, Yasmin or Ocella discuss their complete medical history with their doctor before starting a course of this medication. Those with the highest risk of developing such severe health complications include women over the age of 35, women who smoke, and those with a history of health complications. These women will need to work with their doctors to find an alternate form of contraception.
