Yaz Stroke

Generically referred to as drispirenone, Yaz is a birth control pill that, since 2006, has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to also be prescribed in the treatment of moderate acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a debilitating form of PMS. Yaz is produced by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, who also produces another drispirenone contraceptive pill known as Yasmin (Ocella). The only difference between Yaz and Yasmin is that, while both contain 3 mg drispirenone, Yaz has 20 mcg ethinyl estradiol, and Yasmin contains 30mcg of this bio-active estrogen. When taken daily within 4 hours of the same time, Yaz claims to be 99.9 percent effective at preventing pregnancy.

Yaz has been reported to cause a number of severe, life-threatening side effects, including blood clots and stroke. If you or a loved one has been seriously injured after taking Yaz, or a loved one has died as a result of a Yaz stroke, you will most likely have a legal claim against Bayer HealthCare, and may be eligible for a defective drug settlement. Symptoms of Yaz Strokes

It's important that women taking Yaz are aware of the symptoms of Yaz strokes so they know when to seek emergency medical care. The earlier a stroke is treated, the less likely patients will experience severe, irreversible damage to their health. Yaz stroke symptoms may include:

  • Confusion
  • Difficulty walking, speaking and/or seeing
  • Drooling
  • Headache
  • Paralysis (numbness) on one side of the body
  • Vomiting

In some cases, a stroke will have no symptoms. Referred to as asymptomatic, these cases are typically only identifiable when an individual loses consciousness.

Risk Factors for Yaz Strokes

Some women will be more likely to experience a Yaz stroke. Factors that may increase the risk include:

  • Women who are older than 35 years old
  • History of blood clots, heart attack and/or stroke
  • Smoking cigarettes

To minimize the risk of stroke when taking Yaz, it's vital that women:

  • Discuss their complete medical history with their doctor before starting a course of this medication
  • Only take Yaz as directed
  • Take the time to be aware of the types and symptoms of serious Yaz side effects
