Yasmin Birth Control Pills

Manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Yasmin is a birth control pill that has been FDA-approved and available via prescription in the U.S. since 2004. Like Yaz, Yasmin is comprised of drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol, a bioactive form of estrogen. This combination of hormones allows Yaz and Yasmin to be appropriate and effective at preventing pregnancy and treating moderate acne and PMDD.

Tragically, however, this combination of hormones can also be responsible for causing patients to develop a range of severe, life-threatening side effects, including stroke, heart attack and pulmonary embolism. It's essential that women considering starting a course of Yasmin or Ocella, the generic form, talk to their doctor before taking this contraceptive tablet. If a woman's risk is determined to be low and she starts taking Yasmin, it will then be crucial that she:

  • Only take Yasmin as directed
  • Completely understands the range of side effects, as well as their symptoms, associated with Yasmin
  • Get annual exams so doctors can monitor her health
  • Receive immediate medical attention, should she develop serious Yasmin side effects

Hormone Levels in Yaz versus Yasmin

The only difference between Yaz and Yasmin is the amount of ethinyl estradiol each contains. While both pills contain 3mg drospirenone:

  • Yasmin has 30mcg ethinyl estradiol
  • Yaz has 20mcg ethinyl estradiol

Despite this slight difference, Yaz and Yasmin have both been associated with side effects that range from being mild and curable to severe and fatal.

Yasmin Side Effects & Lawsuits

In most cases, women taking Yasmin will only experience mild, reversible and highly treatable side effects, such as changes in menstruation, breast swelling and vaginal discharge. Rarely, however, Yasmin been found to cause a number of possibly deadly side effects, including:

  • Blood clots
  • Breast lumps
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Heart attack
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver damage
  • Pulmonary embolism (PE)
  • Stroke

Women who smoke, are older than 35 and/or have a history of the above health conditions will have the highest risk of developing severe Yasmin side effects. If you or a loved one suffered an injury while taking Yasmin, you should stop using the contraceptive immediately and seek medical attention to prevent further health complications.
